Four inches of rain came down in the last two days, the remnants of Hurricane Isaac, and in the woods several large, alien-looking, egg-like mushrooms appeared — the giant puffball mushroom, which ranges from 8 inches to 20 inches wide. It’s smooth and white, and in the dimness of the woods appears like a strange phantom.

We read in our mushroom book (and on the web) that the mushrooms are supposed to be “choice,” and that no poisonous look-a-likes are to be found in this area… so we took the chance, and —
